Technique: Inspired by the geological processes of sedimentation, erosion and weathering; I have created a set up where forms emerge as a result of repeated activity over time. Many layers of brushed slip accumulate to create this piece. The clay grows and changes continuously until it is fired with metal oxides to create fascinating textured surfaces. Breaking, cracking and fusing in the kiln these fragments materialize time. The finished piece is contrasted with its placement on defined marble forms. This juxtaposition of textures exaggerates the construction and fault lines in the ceramic work. They enhance the fragility of the form, generating a subtle tension.

Year of completion: 2017

With a deep interest in geology, I am intrigued by landscapes which although seem so permanent are always in the process of being re-shaped. Like time, they never stand still. Clay as a material has a deep connection to the landscape and the places on earth where it is found. In my work I try and invoke the textural quality of geological compositions and land forms. The work references the landscape, like a topographical mark on a map but could equally reference the cell structure of the material.
