Darling, did you turn off the gas?

L’opera “Darling, did you turn off the gas?” mostra le fiamme di una stufa a gas, divenuta simbolo della scarsità di gas a seguito dell’attacco russo all’Ucraina. Il titolo colloca l’opera nella quotidianità, in modo quasi ironico, ma allude anche alla politica attuale: la crisi del gas e la crisi climatica. La nostra preoccupazione per il gas, che scorre indisturbato, nasconde il fatto che il gas contribuisce al cambiamento climatico. Per preservare il nostro pianeta come luogo in cui valga la pena vivere, dobbiamo anche trovare alternative al suo utilizzo.

The work “Darling, did you turn off the gas?” shows flames of a gas stove, which has become a symbol of the scarcity of gas as a result of the Russian attack on the Ukraine. The title locates this work in an everyday situation in an almost ironic way, but also hints at references to current politics– the gas crisis and the climate crisis. Our current fixation on gas flowing undisturbed masks the fact that gas contributes to climate change. In order to preserve our planet as a place worth living in, we must also find alternatives for the use of gas.

L’opera di Frank Louis è costituita dai quattro grandi bruciatori a gas, più che realistici. Il titolo dell’opera è ironico, sarcastico e sembra quasi provenire da un film: “Darling, did you turn off the gas?”, dove non è del tutto chiaro se Darling sia il leader della Russia o se titolo sia una rielaborazione del titolo del film: “Indovina chi viene a cena?”. L’aumento dei prezzi del gas legato alla guerra iniziata nel febbraio 2022 ha mandato in tilt l’intera economia mondiale e milioni di famiglie sono state condannate a pagare la follia di un aggressore russo. Inoltre, questa è l’occasione per guardare più da vicino allo sviluppo del clima attraverso le conseguenze della diminuzione del consumo di gas. Con questo lavoro, Louis mostra il potere dell’immagine, del materiale e dell’artista.

Frank Louis’ work consists of the four large more than lifelike gas burners of a stove. The title of the work is ironic, sarcastic, and almost seems to come from a movie: “Darling, did you turn off the gas?”, where it is not entirely clear whether Darling is the leader of Russia or whether the title is a corruption from one of the few movie titles as a question: “Guess who is coming for dinner?”. Rising gas prices related to the war that began in February 2022 has thrown the entire world economy out of balance and millions of households have been condemned to pay for the madness of a Russian aggressor. In addition, this is the opportunity to take a closer look at climate development through the consequences of declining gas use. With this work, Louis shows the power of the image, of the material and of the maker.
