Attracted to bone china by it’s translucence and purity, I was disapponted by a lack of personality in pieces produced by slip casting techniques, even when finely worked or decorated by hand.

It is however the finest most beautiful ceramic body avaiable, and despite the fact that the properties of the body make it unsuitable for normal throwing, turning and firing techniques, I began to experiment with this method of making.

The qualities imbued in each pot by the handling of the clay durnig the throwing process resulted in a series of bowls with a gentle gradation in translucency. Each piece having an individual quality and personality unobtainable in previous mould made forms. A further carving, cutting and piercing increased the amount of light travelling through each bowl. The final forms are hand polished to a silky smooth finish, colour and glaze having been found to be an unnecessary distraction, and to mask the exquisite natural surface of the body.

Narrow bowl, obliquely cut rim, body carved and pierced with overlapping zigzag panels.
