Damaged goods

A tragic love story played out by porcelain figurines on the back shelves of a bric-a-brac shop, exploring notions of class, material wealth, high culture and low culture using traditions of value within ceramics. Ceramics has been used in a way that goes far beyond being contaminated by other disclipines, it exceeds relationships between single work and production work, it is in itself contaminating other areas, it is the leading role in the work, it acts as the driving force.  One of the reasons for making this film was to see these objects in a new way, I am trying to combine ceramics in this form with a new media.

In this tragic love story played out by porcelain figurines on the back shelves of a bric-a-brac shop, a poor, down-at-heel boy falls for a beautiful girl with shattering consequences. On the cluttered floor of a bric-a-brac shop a poor, down-at-heel boy looks up to the top shelf to see a beautiful girl in tears amongst the crystal and silver. Played out by porcelain figurines and accompanied by an especially composed score, the story follows the boy’s attempt to rescue the girl – and the tragedy that inevitably occurs when high culture falls for low.

Full credits: Commissioned by Animate Projects, an Arts Council and Channel 4-funded scheme that has produced 90 artist-led animated films since 1991.
